VersaTale is an AI interactive fiction app that generates illustrated choose your own adventure stories. You pick a theme or describe a story idea, and VersaTale writes a personalized story with original illustrations as you read. How is VersaTale different from other interactive fiction apps?
Most interactive fiction apps fall into two camps: hand-written branching novels with a fixed catalogue of stories, or open-ended text playgrounds that feel like chatting with an AI. VersaTale sits between the two — every story is generated fresh and personalized to you, but presented as a paced, illustrated narrative with a beginning, middle, and end. Closer to reading a book than playing a chat.
Is VersaTale free?
VersaTale is free to download on iOS and Android, and new users get a batch of welcome credits on signup — enough to write your first story. After that, a subscription is required to keep generating stories; subscriptions are currently the only way to earn more credits. There are no ads.
Can I write my own choices, or only pick from suggestions?
Both. Each scene offers suggested choices you can tap, or you can type your own choice in free text. Custom choices let you take the story anywhere — including directions the AI didn't suggest.
What kinds of stories can I create?
Any setting and any genre — fantasy, sci-fi, mystery, romance, horror, slice-of-life, comedy, and more. You can pick from curated themes (whimsical, epic, dark, mysterious, romantic, melancholic, comedic) or describe your own.

The VersaTale app interface is available in English and German. Stories themselves are generated in whatever language you write your story idea in — describe your prompt in English, French, Spanish, Japanese, or any other language, and the story will be written in that language.
